The ongoing year has given the gaming community some real gems, which is great and all, but topping it is going to be an uphill battle for 2024. Or will it?
While declaring next year a better gaming year would be premature of us, we can tell you the selection is exciting enough to give 2023 some stiff competition. Check out our take on this year’s releases in these video game reviews. All said, the following video games of 2024 give us all something to look forward to.
Baldur’s Gate 3: The Console Version
If you’re an avid gamer, you’ve probably already played Baldur’s Gate 3, or BG3, on your PC. Thanks to continuous delays, we've had to make do with a much smaller screen until the Xbox version of the game is released.
According to the latest word from developers, the game is set to release in November 2023, but we wouldn’t be surprised if there’s yet another delay, pushing its release to next year. Having already played this game, we can provide a short review to ramp up the excitement.
BG3 is a roleplaying game set in the Forgotten Realms of Dungeons and Dragons. It lets players create their characters or choose from well-voiced companions with intricate backgrounds. The story begins with you finding yourself in a dire situation, setting the stage for an epic adventure. The game follows a typical RPG structure with exploration, combat, looting, and an abundance of side quests and character interactions.
The game offers a remarkable level of detail, responding to your choices, spells, and abilities in a way that resembles a Dungeon Master’s adaptability. However, the game’s immense content can be both a strength and a drawback, offering an overwhelming number of distractions.
The Wolf Among Us 2
The first installment of The Wolf Among Us was released ten years ago, long enough for an entirely new generation of gamers to enter the space. If you started playing video games around that time, you’ll have heard whispers, if not gushing praise of this game.
Set in a hidden community of fairy-tale characters living in modern New York, you play Bigby Wolf, the sheriff tasked with maintaining order. The game's narrative is a gripping mix of mystery, crime, and fantasy, with your choices driving the story's direction.
It excels in delivering a compelling narrative, intricate character development, and moral dilemmas that make your decisions feel impactful. As you navigate through a web of intrigue, your choices can lead to various outcomes, making for an experience you’ll surely want to return to with the 2024 installment.
Alone in the Dark
Older gamers will have probably heard about Alone in the Dark, a game that was initially released in 1992 and has since had five more installments. The latest or seventh installment in the series will likely be the first video game drop of 2024 as it's slated for release on January 16th.
For those who don’t know, Alone in the Dark is a classic survival horror game that has left a significant mark on the genre. Set in a mysterious New Orleans mansion, players step into the shoes of investigator Edward Carnby to solve a supernatural mystery.
The video game is known for its pioneering use of fixed camera angles and pre-rendered backgrounds, creating an immersive atmosphere. It laid the foundation for future survival horror titles like Resident Evil and Silent Hill, with resource management and limited inventory space raising the stakes.
Since the game's controls and graphics may feel dated by today’s standards, the franchise is reimagining it for contemporary PC and console players, giving you a chance to enjoy it in the present day.
Avowed
If you like the Pillars of Eternity, you’ll love Avowed, a role-play video game set in the same universe, promising to offer the same fast-paced action and graphics as PoE.
It will blend action elements with the signature RPG systems that Obsidian Entertainment is known for. Players can anticipate dynamic fantasy battles featuring spell casting and the use of firearms to tackle enemies and accomplish quests.
Look forward to this video game, set to release on Windows PC and Xbox in 2024.
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl
The second S.T.A.L.K.E.R. installment is set to release on PCs and Xbox Series S and Xbox Series Z in the first quarter of 2024.
The video game’s first installment, Shadow of Chernobyl, is set in the aftermath of a second nuclear disaster in the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone. The game excels in crafting a haunting atmosphere, and its storyline follows the journey of the amnesiac "Marked One" as they unravel mysteries in a world filled with anomalies, mutated creatures, and fellow Stalkers.
Survival plays a pivotal role as you manage resources like ammo and supplies. The game's intelligent AI keeps combat unpredictable. It offers an open world with side quests, and your choices affect the story and factions in the Zone.
Despite some challenges and technical issues, S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl is a captivating experience, perfect for post-apocalyptic and narrative-driven shooter enthusiasts. The shooter game is said to be surprisingly challenging, according to early reviews. If you like a challenge, you’ll have quite the time overcoming its obstacles.
